At home
Saying it once, properly.
She already knows something is wrong. What she does not know is what it is, so she is filling the gap herself.
Why the silence costs more
You have not said it at home because you do not want to frighten her, because you do not have a plan yet, and because you would rather arrive with a solution than a problem. Those are decent motives and they produce a bad outcome.
She already knows something is wrong. She has been watching you check your phone at eleven at night and go quiet. What she does not know is what it is, so she is filling the gap herself, and what people fill gaps with is usually worse than the truth.
Why it comes out as panic
Because it has been in the drawer for four months, so when it finally comes out it arrives at full pressure, usually late at night, usually after a drink, usually in the form of a sweeping statement about everything being over.
Then she reacts to the pressure rather than the content, you feel worse for having said it, and it goes back in the drawer with an added layer of shame. Most men only try this once.
The shape of saying it once, properly
Four parts, in this order, and not at midnight.
- What you have seen. Specific and factual. The thing that took four seconds. The colleague who was not replaced. Not "AI is going to destroy my industry".
- What you do not know. Say plainly that you cannot predict it and that nobody can. This is the part that stops it sounding like a prophecy.
- What you are already doing. Even if it is small. Especially if it is small. "I have written down what I actually do all day and I am testing which parts of it are automatable" is a completely different message from "I think I am finished".
- What you want from her. Be specific, because this is the part men leave out and then resent. To know. To not have it raised in front of the children. To look at the money together. To be asked about it once a fortnight rather than never or daily.
What not to ask her for
Do not ask her to tell you it will be fine. She does not know either, you will not believe her, and it puts her in the position of having to manage your fear on top of her own.
And do not say it once and then go silent for a month. That is worse than not saying it, because now she is carrying it as well and has been told the subject is closed.
If she does react badly
She might. Sometimes it lands on top of something of her own, and comes back as anger about money or about you being dramatic. That is frightening and it is usually fear rather than a judgement on you.
Do not conclude from one bad conversation that you were right to keep it quiet. Try again at a different hour, with the four parts above, and with the third one first if the first attempt sounded like a forecast.
Children
Older children can be told the truth in general terms: the work is changing, you are getting ahead of it, nothing is happening tomorrow. They notice tension and they conclude it is about them or about the marriage. A plain sentence is kinder than an atmosphere.
Do not make a teenager your confidant about the mortgage, and do not use a child as a reason to say nothing to anybody. Men do both.
If you have nobody to say it to
Some men in this position genuinely have no one. No partner, or a marriage where this cannot be raised, and friendships that have not carried anything real in years.
The guide on this site is not a substitute for a person and does not pretend to be. It is a place to say it out loud once, in your own words, before you try it on somebody who matters. That is a narrow use and a real one.
